Jamal Mecklai: Manmohan Singh`s poker lesson
To paraphrase Winston Churchill, “Proficiency in poker is evidence of a misspent young adulthood.” By this measure, I had an extremely misspent young adulthood, which resulted in both some wonderful stories and very useful lessons for later life.
When I was in college in the US, I got roped into a Monday Night Poker game with some undergraduates, which — having learned about gambling at my father’s knee — went some ways towards keeping me in beer and, occasionally, champagne. I remember my brightest moment was one evening during a hand of Esmerelda, a strange variation where you have three cards in the hole and an array of up cards some of which have to be used and so on. When the cards were dealt, I found I had — hold your breath — three Aces in the hole.
