Pressure to reduce poker machines

The Tasmanian Government is facing growing pressure to start cutting back the number of poker machines.

The State Liberals are reassessing their gaming policy and deciding whether to support reducing the number of machines in Tasmania.

A report released yesterday pointed at poker machines as the main source of problem gambling.

The Liberal leader, Will Hodgman, says his team is reassessing its policy after a call from the party faithful for fewer pokies.

“And the clear difference between the Labor and Liberal party is if we see a problem, we’ll set about fixing it,” he said.

The Liberals will also consider the implications of breaking the deal that gives Federal Hotels the sole right to operate poker machines in Tasmania until 2018.
